LOS ALTOS HILLS RESIDENCE
Los Altos Hills, California
The residential property is situated near a Bay Area national park on a steep, heavily wooded slope. The architect wanted to minimize the building’s impact on the natural habitat, so a series of 10 interlocking volumes were designed to be lifted off the ground and follow the contour of the hill, giving the appearance of a floating house. From the entrance at the top of the ridge near the garage, the building cascades down and culminates in a rooftop terrace. The wood frame house is built on a foundation of galvanized steel piloti, embedded within drilled piers and interconnected by concrete grade beams.
